As temperatures begin to rise, it’s important to note that warm weather may pose a risk for vulnerable populations. Here are five tips to help keep seniors cool and safe during the hottest months:
Stay Hydrated:
Staying hydrated is always important, especially during summer months. On hot days, our bodies need more water than usual. Encourage seniors to drink water throughout the day and incorporate hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, pineapple, and more.
Plan Indoor Activities:
On days when the temperature may be uncomfortable for seniors, plan indoor activities. Keep indoors cool and comfortable by closing blinds and curtains, utilizing fans, and running air conditioning. Public spaces like libraries and community centers are a great alternative, as they typically have air conditioning.
Dress Appropriately:
Wearing loose-fitting clothing made of fabrics such as linen and cotton allows for optimal comfort during the summer months. Accessories such as hats and sunglasses also help with sun exposure.
Wear Sunscreen:
Sunscreen is imperative year-round, but especially during the summer when UV rays are at their highest. Sunscreen can help to prevent sunburns, early skin aging, and skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Know Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke:
Familiarize yourself with the warning signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These illnesses can be severe and may require medical attention. Review the symptoms provided by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
